    About the Tulip Series

A few words from the artist

"The 'Tulip' series is an ongoing theme where it became important to find some joy in the drawing process. When I first began working repetitively with line in 2016, I was going through a lot of deeply personal issues. By the time I would finish drawing on these large slab-like sheets, the use of line over and over again left me physically and mentally exhausted, like crossing an ocean of water swimming one stroke at a time.

Moving to England in 2020 from Texas was not just a change of physical location, but also a change of mindset. Being in a country that artistically celebrates nature challenged me to portray other themes while still retaining this linear style I was developing. The spring is an especially inspiring time of year in England for renewal and all things that bloom. I was also looking for ways to break away from the square or rectangle surface of paper sheets. Thus began a foray into wet-folding techniques found in Japanese origami.

The tulips are a way for me to find joy in the drawing process. Through them I can include all the conversations I've had about femininity, womanhood and reproduction. They can exist as single blooms or be arranged in bouquets. They truly make me happy and I feel like I'm doing flower arranging, except mine won't fade. I've now made them in different sizes and configurations and they can be displayed framed and unframed. "
